Behind the Print

Plant-based filament, honestly

We print in PLA, which is made from fermented plant starch, usually corn. That is a genuinely better starting point than petroleum, and it is not the same thing as biodegradable in your kitchen.

What is true

  • PLA is plant-derived rather than oil-derived, and it takes less energy to produce than most plastics.
  • It is industrially compostable, meaning it breaks down in a commercial facility at sustained high heat.
  • It does not leach plasticizers, which is why it is the standard material for food-adjacent printing.

What is not true

It will not compost in a backyard pile, and it will not break down if it ends up in a landfill or a ditch. Treated as litter, a PLA figurine behaves like any other plastic. We would rather say that plainly than let the corn label do the talking.

Plant-based is a fact about where it came from, not a promise about where it goes.

The practical takeaway: keep it, give it away, or pass it on. Do not treat it as disposable, because it is not.
